Datapanik Records Compilations

Datapanik Records was primarily active in the 1990s, although they've had a few releases out in the 2010s, and their roster of bands and artists on compilations reflect their prime years.

Girly Machine, New Bomb Turks, Pica Huss, Greenhorn, Gaunt, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments are just a few that appear on the 1992 compilation Bumped By Karaoke.

1997's Ubu Dance Party features bands from all over the state, including Columbus bands like Skullbank, RC Mob, Haynes Boys, Scrawl, Pet UFO and others.

CityBeat: Ohio Garage Punk Greats New Bomb Turks are Back on the Road and Coming to Newport

New Bomb Turks first roared out of Ohio’s own college-centric capital city in 1990, making its mark with an amped-up sonic storm — a tornado of loud, no-frills Rock & Roll served up with an undeniable penchant for twisting bare-bones guitar riffs into a frantic and careless racket. It got burped out as brash Garage Punk and — not that they took time to notice — the Turks unwittingly drafted a fresh page of Punk Rock history in the process. 

They’d go on to release eight albums, a compilation LP, three EPs and more than 20 singles over the course of a decade. In doing so, the Turks paved the way for a litany of late-’90s Garage Punk outfits to find Rock radio success in their wake. 

But while mainstream fame on that level eluded the Turks themselves, they were (and still are) regarded as preeminent members of an underground garage-band society devoted to preserving Punk’s original primal flame, staunch supporters of Rock’s early raw roots — the stuff that made the music seem so dangerous and carefree in the first place.

My first introduction to the New Bomb Turks was actually via the Dig Me Out podcast I cohost during our fourth season in 2014 when we reviewed the third album Scared Straight. Many, many years later, as I kicked-off this project, I finally got around to giving the whole catalog a listen and started picking up other releases, including their debut !!Destroy-Oh-Boy!! released in 1993 on Crypt Records. I know the band had a few years under their belt by the time the debut was released, but it's amazing to hear such a young band so fully in control and confident in their sound.

New Additions: Both Sides Never album by The Patsys

Thanks to me being a) not from Columbus, b) busy with my own band, and c) generally ill-informed, I didn't know the lineage of The Patsys when they started playing out in the early 2000s. With former members (at that time) of Action Family, Gaunt, and New Bomb Turks, the current version of me would be psyched to check them out. Sadly, I came to them late after picking up their 2007 album "Both Sides Never" at one of the local record stores late last year, which is chock full of Nuggets-esque garage rock.

Wex Q&A - Matt Reber of New Bomb Turks interviews Amy Fusselman of The Bread Group

New Bomb Turks bassist and Wexner Center Store Manager Matt Reber interviewed writer/author/publisher Amy Fusselman last year for the Wex website, and dug deep into one of the lesser known Columbus bands of the 1980s, The Bread Group. Here is some of the interview:

Amy FusseIman was the guitarist in The Bread Group. I have been familiar with her writing since the Pharmacist’s Mate was published by McSweeney’s in 2001. Eventually, a thread on the Facebook page “Columbus Music Scene 1975-1985” led to our connecting, and to the reading and book signing coming up.  

What year did The Bread Group form and how long did you play together? 
I graduated from OSU in 1986 so it must have been a couple years before that. Our band was me, vocalist Frank Snider, lead guitarist Richie Athy, bassist Patrick Roetzel, and drummer Andy Izold. I played rhythm guitar. Patrick, Frank and I were all undergrads in the English department and the band stayed together until we graduated. We played mostly at a place called the IP Lounge, which was a bar on High Street run by a Greek gentleman named Louie. He also sold one-dollar gyro sandwiches which were the source of much morning remorse for me.  

What were your perceptions of the OSU/Columbus, Ohio scene at the time?
I was obsessed with music at OSU. That was my real focus of study. I was a DJ at the OSU radio station along with Frank, who was then my boyfriend and is now my husband. We saw bands constantly, mostly at Stache’s. Some of the most important audience-member experiences of my life were at Stache’s: The Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Pussy Galore, Agent Orange … I also vividly remember seeing The Cramps and X at The Newport and The Gun Club at a little bar called Crazy Mama’s. I was so lucky to see those shows!! 

I didn’t really appreciate how rich the scene was at the time. It was just people I knew doing interesting things. I saw Scrawl come into their power and that was really important for me to witness. I saw The Great Plains and The Gibson Brothers develop. Frank and I still quote Gibson Brothers lyrics: Big Pine Boogie!

New Additions: Did Your Mother Tell You? EP by The Sun

Having moved to Columbus in 1998, I was here when the whirlwind that was The Sun swept into town, specifically Chris Burney grabbing band members from Flotation Walls, The Jive Turkeys and New Bomb Turks to form his backing band. At the time, the demos were floating around town on CD-rs for folks to check out and discuss, specifically, how did this band score a deal with Warner Brothers? The answer is the songs. The two EPs released in 2003 and 2004 show off an advanced level of song craft that should have been huge at the time. Further rumors swirled years later about what went wrong, but we still have some great tunes.
